DHTML Lemmings
Just like the original game is legendary for it's innovative and addictive gameplay, this DHTML version was a bit of a milestone in JavaScript gaming when it was published back in 2003.

Originally made for the 2003 Gathering of Tweakers DHTML contest, the release of DHTML Lemmings caused a whole bunch of drama as its use of graphics from the original Lemmings game ticked off the Dutch anti-piracy people. The author posted his side of the story here, if you're interested. I'm not sure what the final outcome was, but fortunately the game is still online on another site so we can once again play Lemmings online.
The game itself is a near pixel perfect copy of the original, the graphics are identical as are the levels and the gameplay. It all plays really well too, you might as well be playing the real thing. Very nice. The animated graphics seem to be a mix of animated GIFs (for the background/level graphics) and CSS sprites for the lemmings.
The source code is also available in a zip package (without any of the legally troubling assets).

Doesn't work properly in chrome... once you select a level all the sounds/music load in Quicktime containers and you can't see anything other than Quicktime control bars.
