One of the very first video games and definitely one of the most popular games ever, Space Invaders is a true classic. Kris Cieslak used YUI to recreate some of that 1978 magic and the result is pretty good.
While it's not a pixel perfect copy, the graphics are very close to the original and the blocky, pixelated visuals give the game a distinct retro feel. My only complaint is with the keyboard handling. It seems to rely on the keyboard repeating the keydown events when you hold the key down. This means there's a small delay from when you press the key until your cannon starts moving.
All in all, this is a great Space Invaders clone, even if it lacks a few minor details in order to be complete. Also check out his blog post about the game
We all know those puzzle games where you have to unshuffle an image by shifting one piece at a time. Kris Cieslak has made one such game, using YUI as usual, but instead of just using a predefined image, he lets you pull in an image from Flickr. How cool is that?
He talks about how he created the game on his blog. You type in a search query which is then sent off to Flickr. A number of images are returned and you get to pick which one to use. The image is then "chopped up" by creating several instances, each in its own small container element, and then using CSS background positions to only show the relevant part of the image.
It's a pretty clever use of the Flickr API and I hope we'll see more and more games like this one that make creative use of all the data is available through this and similar APIs.
This is a Tetris clone made by Kris Cieslak in his quest to get to know the Yahoo User Interface library. The result is a pretty smooth looking Tetris game.
Kris has left the gameplay pretty much intact, no big differences from the original game besides how scoring is calculated. The visuals are pretty although the tetrominoes are all the same yellow color.
Kris also made a blog post about Yetris that you can read here.
The classic Klondike-style solitaire card game created with JavaScript and HTML by Kris Cieslak using the Yahoo User Interface library.
This is a pretty straight-forward solitaire implementation. The game only lets you deal one card at a time and it looks like you have an unlimited number of deals. Other than that, there's not much to say about the gameplay. One annoying thing is that it automatically resizes itself according to the size of the window. While that's fine for smaller window sizes, things get rather spread out at higher resolutions.
One interesting thing to note is how the cards are generated. Rather than loading an image for each card or even just one huge image with all the cards, Kris is dynamically putting together each card using small images of the different numbers, symbols, etc. Cool.
Another attempt at a Pac-Man remake, this time by Kris Cieslak. His weapon of choice is YUI, the User Interface library developed by Yahoo!
One problem I found with this game is that it runs a bit too fast. I think if he fixed the game speed, this could be a very nice Pac-Man clone. It also doesn't have quite the feel of the original, but I'm sure this can be fixed with a bit of tweaking. It is a beta version, so these issues are forgiven. Nice job so far, Kris.
